The Cosmos
This is an actual telescope image and each little speck is a galaxy. It almost caused me to pray, but the only homage I can pay to the universe is to try and make a contribution - however small - to my species' understanding of it.
About Me
Ring Ring ! Einstein ?
This is a hubble telescope photo of a very rare phenomenon - a double Einstein ring. Einstein rings are formed due to gravitational lensing - massive bodies (galaxies, black holes, stars etc) bend light which passes by them, just like an optical lens. If the massive body is exactly between us and the more distant light emmitting object, then we see a ring of light called an Einstein ring. And when there are two massive bodies between us and the light emmitting object, which are far away from each other and all perfectly aligned, we see two Einstein rings, as in this photo. As you can imagine, something like this is quite improbable, so its quite a nice little photo :-) And appareantly this will reveal all sorts of things about dark matter and what not, because one of the ways dark matter can be detected is by its gravitational lensing effect.
New Years Eve
I decided to walk around the city alone in the hours leading up to the new year, and I caught this moment - Peace on the Graslie, the water as still as a mirror...... she can be very beautiful when she wants to be.. this strange city
This picture I took just after the first euphoria of the new year and the deafening roar of fire crackers had died down. People were beginning to quieten and I thought - for the first time since I came here - man...I'm in Europe ! ........ Europe ..... I dont know why, but that was the moment when I felt I had arrived.
A Famous Victory
This is an Indian team like few before (save perhaps for the era of Gavaskar and Vishwanath and the spin quartet) They are not afraid of winning as so many Indian teams I grew up watching seemed to be. After all that has passed, this was an object lesson in tenacity and mental strength. I'll take it.
Christmas approaches
The Graslie all done up for christmas, beautiful and deserted. The air was cold but the atmosphere was warm.
Cosmic Dance
These two galaxies have come too close to each other and the larger spiral one (NGC3808) (right) seems to have thrown a tentacle out to entwine the smaller oval one (NGC3808A). They may or may not merge into one in due course of time. Apparently, in a couple of billion years, the Andromeda Galaxy will be very very close to our own, and since they're both about the same size, watch for some spectacular fireworks !
View of Kenjalgad (the flattop mountain one can discern in the centre of the picture) from the path to Raireshwar, just before we reached the top of the ridge connecting the two. As you can see, they are not exactly close by !

Anohter road
A snap from the old town as promised. I'm still on the outer edges both geographically and culturally - it takes some time to get to know the place. I'll spend some time there over the next few days and see what there is to see.
Supari Hanuman
This is a hanuman temple in the old town, its tiny and very well known. It has been renovated by the looks of it, but the setting and the peepal tree behind it suggest respectable antiquity. The roads that weave around it on all sides are narrow and this photo has been taken from the widest of them. The temple is unique in the sense that on all sides, the road begins almost where the wall of the inner sanctum ends. The whole city, with all its faiths and people is its mandapam, what are a thousand pillars ?
A little shop next to the temple selling sacred thread and little books of hindu scripture. The old gentleman is wearing a typical brahmin costume, now not often seen except in little bubbles of the past such as these that survive scattered here and there
